Previously in our adventures, the fearless Becca and her partner in crime Elizabeth were searching the streets of Toronto to create some kind of weekend that could bring up memories of Tokyo. Despite the rain, wind, and being two weeks late, the mission of finding cherry blossoms to take part in the tradition of hanami was successful.
Now, I’m going to go out of chronological order, simply for my posting sanity. TECHNICALLY, this is when I should be writing about the musical we went to see. But I’m going to save that until I see the show again next week and give it the proper, glowing review it deserves. So lets skip over to the next day, shall we?
When I go to Toronto, I have to go to the Korean Grill House. I’m not even kidding, this is a mandated requirement. All my friends are aware of this, and they don’t argue (lest they know what’s good for them.
) Pretty much, it’s barbecue. There is one thing on the menu, and that’s meat. Lots. And lots. Of meat. Oh, I’m sure there are other things there… But why would you go to a grill house for anything but the meat? It’s like going to a steakhouse and only wanting the garden salad.
So the Korean Grill House sounds like it’s Korean, right? And it is. Technically. But, Koreans and Japanese people share the same love for ridiculous amounts of meat grilled in thin little strips. In Japan, it’s called yakiniku (literally, grilled meat) and it is delicious. So while the NAME is Korean, our meal was Japanese in spirit.
If you ever get the opportunity to go to the Korean Grill House in Toronto, I highly recommend getting the all you can eat deal. You get a huge variety of meat and fish (but the fish never cooks nicely don’t waste it) along with rice, some nice soup thing, and a bunch of spicy Korean side dishes that I can never eat (I foresee this being a problem in Korea, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it). When I go, I usually know 24 hours in advance and prepare by not eating, because I probably eat my weight in rice and meat. Or, it at least feels like it.
With our bellies full of meat and our minds filled with thoughts of cherry blossoms, amazingly, we were already half way through our Japanese weekend of things to to, with a full schedule of more stuff coming up in the next day!
